Youth Shield 2018

Finals played at Clacton Golf Club 16th September
Scratch Final
Congratulations to Colchester GC on their victory over Abridge 3-2.

The 2018 Youth Shield final was played at Clacton Golf Club on Sunday 16thSeptember with Abridge playing against last year’s beaten finalists Colchester.

The standard of golf on display was excellent and kept the large number of supporters entertained throughout the final. Abridge were unable to play Curtis Knipes in their team as he was on duty for Essex in the County Champions event at Woodhall Spa, but that did not deter Harvey Sullivan, promoted to number 1 he had an excellent 6&4 victory over Colchester’s Dan Nicholls. Wins for Max Maynard and Josh Coleman got Colchester on the scoreboard, but a win on the 18thby Lewis Wright tied things up at 2 points each with the final match entering the closing holes.

Colchester’s Charley Hayley was 2 up going down the 16thhole, but a short while later after some gritty play from George Halleybone the match was on the 18thtee with Charley only 1 up. George managed to par the 18thleaving Charley with a four-footer to win the match, but alas her putt slipped by the hole taking the match into extra holes. For the second year running The Youth Shield final, and Colchester’s fate, would be sealed in extra holes. Thankfully for the Colchester supporters Charley did not let the missed putt on the 18thaffect her, and in winning the first extra hole she brought an excellent final to a close, and the Youth Shield trophy to Colchester.

It was a great match which was enjoyed by all spectators, our congratulations to Colchester who have won the trophy they so narrowly lost last year.

Our thanks to Clacton Golf Club for hosting this event as part of our finals day.

Handicap Final
Congratulations to Rochford Hundred on their victory over The Warren 3-2.

The top team in each of the four leagues this year progressed to semi-finals, with Rochford Hundred and The Warren prevailing to be part of our finals day event at Clacton Golf Club on Sunday 16thSeptember.

A large number of supporters were kept entertained throughout the final by two teams who clearly enjoyed the experience. The first two matches went down to the 18thhole resulting in wins in both matches to Rochford. At the back of the field in matches 4 and 5 The boys from The Warren closed out two comfortable wins to tie up the scores at 2 points each, with the final match in play on the 18thfairway. In the end, Alex Oddy held on to win his match 2 up ,the Rochford Hundred team were just able to perform that little bit better on the day to secure a 3 – 2 victory. Both teams can be proud of the way they played, and their achievement in making it into the final.

It was a great match which was enjoyed by all spectators, our congratulations to both teams, and particularly to Rochford Hundred for their success.

Our thanks to Clacton Golf Club for hosting this event and extending a warm welcome to all involved in finals day.
