Our first match of the 2024 season did not go ahead as planned. The British weather played havoc with our preparations and we were forced into a very late change of venue to enable us to at least get some kind of match played for The David Hall Trophy. Many thanks go out to Gog Magog GC who generously stepped in to host the match due to Essex being underwater, so we travelled to Cambridge for our "home" fixture. The muddled run up to the match did little to help our plans and the guys had no time to see the course or have a practice round, so it meant we went into the game blind, and by the end it was most certainly difficult to see as dark descended on us very quickly.
Cambridgeshire have certainly strengthened their team over the winter with a couple of notable additions who have moved to them from Suffolk and it made for a very tight and entertaining match. We played 12 singles matches as we were only able to get tee times for the afternoon, so the foursomes went by the wayside and after a very closely fought encounter the result of the match was a 6-6 draw. This meant we retained the trophy having won it in 2023 and leaves us with a number of vital pieces of information about our players as we look forward to the rest of the season.
A mention for a couple of guys playing their first matches for the county team. Dylan Hussey had a 5&4 victory and Sam Epstein, despite losing, performed well as his opponent was 7 under for 16 holes. Excellent victories for captain Ben Humphrey (4&3), Charlie Croker (5&4) and Ben Tobin (3&1) along with close wins for Harley Smith & Josh Tobin saw us to the draw in almost complete darkness on the 18th green.
Thanks again to Cambridgeshire for a great match and for hosting at such late notice and we look forward, weather permitting, to welcoming you back to Essex in 2025.
To my team, this is the start of a long season and we look forward to the big targets that we have in 2024 with hope and enthusiasm. Onwards and Upwards gentlemen.
