Essex Seniors Team Championship Final 2024
Orsett Golf Club, Wednesday 4th September 2024
Burnham on Crouch V Crondon Park
The 2024 Seniors Team Championship final was played at Orsett Golf Club on Wednesday 4th September, between Burnham on Crouch and Crondon Park Golf Clubs. Having pursued their journeys throughout the various stages of the championship in a summer with weather that could only be described as truly a mixed bag, these two teams played their way through to emerge as worthy finalists. It was a perfect day for playing golf, the weather was mostly sunny with intermittent overcast spells, there was no wind to hinder the players, and the temp was around 20 °C. The course was immaculately prepared the fairways where green and lush however, if you went off the fairway then the rough was hard and difficult to play from in places. The greens where a good pace and running true.
The teams were evenly matched for the final with the maximum difference between the players playing handicap being 3 shots. In the early stages of the game through five holes Burnham were up in 6 games so all to play for after a great start by Burnham.
The matches were played in a great spirit and the fighting resilience of Crondon came through to turn the deficit around from the first five holes to be up in 6 games after 12 holes, still all to play for. Crondon won the first three matches and earned a ½ point in the 4th game which gave them a 3½-point lead and a solid start to win the seniors championship 2024. Crondon also won matches 7 and 9 and this meant that they had achieved 5½-points so all they needed now was a ½ point from one of the remaining 4 games to claim the trophy. The ½ point came from game 8 and meant that Crondon are the champions for 2024.
The supporters in attendance had been treated to an exciting afternoon of golf, with the narrowest margin of wins for Crondon Park, 4½- 6½. After the presentation ceremony, the players and representatives of both Clubs enjoyed an evening of good humour and were treated to an excellent meal from their hosts. The Essex Golf Union would like to thank Orsett Golf Club for hosting the event and for their warm hospitality. Also, a huge thank you to the spectators who came out to enthusiastically support both teams and make it a special day; it was indeed a great match played in the best spirit of golf.

ESSEX SENIORS TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP
2023 FINAL
The 2023 Seniors Team Championship was played at Orsett Golf Club on Wednesday 06th September, between Colne Valley and Thorndon Park Golf Clubs.
Players and spectators were welcomed by glorious sunshine accompanied by a gentle breeze. Both teams were well supported and the first tee was a busy place as the matches got underway.
As the early matches reached the 9th hole, Thorndon Park were in control of the first two matches and were to secure the first two points of the day. Colne Valley picked up their first point, winning match three, to cut the deficit to 1 point. The next three matches all went the full eighteen holes, with both sides sharing ‘1 Up’ wins and a halved match. With over half of the matches completed, Thorndon Park retained their 1-point advantage, with the score at 3½ -2 ½.
The state of the remaining matches on the course suggested the overall result was very much in the balance and this was to prove to be the case.
Matches seven and eight were both claimed by Thorndon Park, meaning Colne Valley needed to secure the remaining three points to force a play-off. The pendulum swung once again, with Colne Valley winning match nine on the 17th green and match ten on the 15th.
All eyes were now on the last match out on the course, match eleven, creating a real sense of nervous anticipation, both on the course and in the clubhouse. Thorndon Park had a 2 hole-lead playing the 16th hole. A half on that hole was enough to guarantee them the ½ point they needed to secure overall victory and become 2023 Seniors Team Champions.
The large number of supporters in attendance had been treated to an exciting afternoon of golf, with the narrowest margin of wins for Thorndon Park, 6-5.
After the presentation ceremony, the players and representatives of both Clubs enjoyed an evening of good humour and were treated to an excellent meal from their hosts.
The Essex Golf Union would like to thank Orsett Golf Club for hosting the event and their hospitality, it was a good match played in the best spirit of golf.

ESSEX SENIORS TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP
2022 FINAL
The 2022 Seniors Team Championship was played at Brentwood Golf Club on 31st August between Burnham on Crouch and Crondon Park Golf Clubs.
Having completed their journeys to the final through a very hot and dry summer the two teams set out in near perfect weather conditions for golf, with a gentle breeze to add a little challenge for the occasion.
As the matches progressed through the 9th hole the final looked to be fairly evenly balanced between the sides with most matches either All Square or showing a slender lead to one side or the other, suggesting either team could win the day.
The teams were evenly balanced with only match one requiring more than a couple of strokes to be given. Those shots proved useful for Crondon Park as they took first blood with a 4&2 victory in that individual encounter. Five of the next six matches went to at least the 17th hole to get a result, showing how evenly balanced the teams were, an even split in results leaving Crondon Park still holding a slender lead.
Match eight went the distance and resulted in a half point to both teams, and match eleven concluded out on the course giving Burnham a point to draw the two teams level on 4.5pts each with two matches still in play.
Crondon Park took match 10 on the 17th green to put them on the verge of victory, leaving all Burnham’s hopes resting on Club Captain Colin Reynolds to at least get them into a play-off. Sadly for Burnham it was not to be, and with a 2&1 victory Crondon Park sealed the win.
The large number of supporters in attendance had been treated to an exciting afternoon of golf.
The final result was 6.5 matches to 4.5 in Crondon Park’s favour.
After the presentation ceremony the players and representatives of both Clubs combined for an evening of good humour and were treated to an excellent meal from their hosts.
The Essex Golf Union would like to thank Brentwood Golf Club for hosting the event and their hospitality, it was a good match played in the best spirit of golf.

Congratulations Brentwood Golf Club
ESSEX SENIORS TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP
2021 FINAL
The 2021 Seniors Team Championship was played at Bentley Golf Club on 1st September between Brentwood and Chelmsford Golf Clubs.
The two teams set out on a very autumnal overcast afternoon, which would test the players on a course which was in great condition. The fairways looked very inviting as we anticipated an afternoon of tense matchplay golf.
As the matches progressed through the 11th hole the final looked to be fairly evenly balanced between the sides with a number of matches All Square, and both sides holding good leads in a couple of matches, suggesting either team could win the day. The team from Chelmsford were giving a few shots away to their opponents in all the matches, so perhaps they were under slightly more pressure than their opponents. However, in match 2 Chelmsford got the first point on the board with a win from Simon Gibbins, though this was soon cancelled out by a win in match 3 by Brentwood’s John Rowson. Match 1 was a close fought match all the way round with both players playing great golf, but Mark Brown eventually completed a win for Brentwood 3&1. Both teams then traded wins so that by the time the first eight matches had concluded the match stood a 4 -4, with the final three games entering the closing holes.
Then match 10 concluded on the 15th green with a win for Chelmsford and this was soon followed by a win in match 11 for Brentwood’s Bill Nash. So with the scores tied one match remained on the course with Brentwood holding a slender 1up lead on the 18th tee. Despite the best efforts of Chelmsford’s Neil Godier he was unable to force a win on the 18th, and eventually conceded that hole giving a 2up win for Brentwood’s Ken Taylor.
The large number of supporters in attendance had been treated to an exciting afternoon of golf.
The final result was 6 matches to 5 in Brentwood’s favour.
After the presentation ceremony the players and representatives of both Clubs combined for an evening of good humour and were treated to an excellent meal from their hosts.
The Essex Golf Union would like to thank Bentley Golf Club for hosting the event and their hospitality, it was a good match played in the best spirit of golf.
Final
Congratulations to Bentley Golf Club - 2019 Champions
The 2019 Seniors Team Championship was played at The Rayleigh Club on 4thSeptember between Bentley and The Warren Golf Clubs.
The two teams set out a very autumnal afternoon, a little sunshine but a cool strengthening breeze, which would test the players on a course which was in great condition. The fairways remained firm even after some rain the previous day, as we looked forward to an afternoon of tense matchplay golf.
As the matches progressed through the 11thhole the final looked to be fairly evenly balanced between the sides with a number of matches All Square, suggesting either team could win the day. The team from The Warren were giving a few shots away to their opponents in all the matches, and by this time most of the shots had been used, so perhaps they were the more optimistic of the two sides. However, in matches 2 and 3 the Bentley players managed to forge ahead and secure early points on the board. Match 1 was a close fought match all the way round with both players playing great golf, with its final conclusion on the 18thgreen securing a further point for Bentley by the narrowest of margins. In match 4 Andy Eaton secured the first point for The Warren on the 18thgreen, and this was quickly followed by another point from Match 6.
As match 5 went down the 18thAll Square news came in that Bentley had secured another win in match 7, and were well up in match 9, so The Warren needed some good news. Unfortunately, a good shot from Eric Derham to the green was caught by that treacherous cross wind and finished in the right hand pond. His opponent, Brian Mead, played ‘safe’ finishing a yard short of another penalty area with the aid of a post. From where he was able to close out his match to take the Bentley team to the brink of victory. The Warren’s fate was sealed shortly after as news came in that match 10 had gone to Bentley, securing them their 6thpoint, enough to ensure they would lift the Trophy.
The large number of supporters in attendance had been treated to an exciting afternoon of golf.
The final result was 7.5 to 3.5 to Bentley Golf Club.
After the presentation ceremony the players and representatives of both Clubs combined for an evening of good humour and were treated to an excellent meal from their hosts.
The Essex Golf Union would like to thank The Rayleigh Club for hosting the event and their hospitality, it was a good match played in the best spirit of golf.
