Keating Trophy - Matchplay Result
The Keating Finals on 3 rd & 4 th May saw some great matches unfold with some unexpected winners. Two early withdrawals saw Ollie McEvoy (Thorpe Hall) and Adam Scallon (Bentley) receive BYEs into the quarter-finals stage where 14-year-old Ollie McEvoy had a very impressive 5&4 win in his match against County Team player Bailee Curran! In the other QF matches, big wins for eventual winner Shaun Mills (Orsett) 6&5, and finalist Jack Philips (Bentley) 5&4 saw them progress into the semi-finals with Harrison Ellis (Abridge) in the mix too. Into Sunday morning, Jack Philips carried on his winning streak with a huge 5&4 win against an in-form Ollie McEvoy, and Shaun Mills winning his SF 3up to set up an interesting final on Sunday afternoon.
As the final got underway, Shaun Mills started well giving himself a steady 2up lead thru 6 holes, but with 12 holes left he needed to pick the pace up to give himself a comfortable lead in the match. Mills did just that, and ended the front 9 holes 4up, with Philips needing to fight back hard to give himself a chance of a comeback. Philips started well on the back 9, winning holes 10 & 11 to bring himself back to 2dn thru 11. Setting up a good ending, Mills got one back on 12, before Philips grabbed another win on 13 to bring the match back to 2up Mills with only 5 to play! The next 3 holes were tight, but with only one win needed, Mills secured the title with a 3&2 win, finishing the match on the 16 th hole. Philips showed a lot of determination to not give up from 4 down but couldn’t stop Mills from eventually taking home the trophy. A huge congratulations to county player Shaun Mills on becoming the 2025 Keating Trophy champion!
