Final League match of the season was a home match at Romford Golf Club againt Hertfordshire.
With maximum points from our matches so far, Essex needed just a draw from this match to secure the Northern section title and put us into the England Golf SouthEast region final against Surrey. A win for Herts would do the same for them, so all to play for.
Making debuts for the County side were England youngsters Will Horne and Harley Smith along with current Keating champion and Order of Merit winner, Bailee Curran. With 2 other England players in Zach Chegwidden and Walker cup player Jack Dyer, this was quite a line-up.
Leading off in the first of 8 singles games, home club debutant Bailee led off against Herts regular Joss Gosling and was 2 up at the turn and closed his game out at the 16th with a solid 4&2 win.
In games 2 and 3 both Joe and Ben made rapid starts and by the 9th were both 5 up and cruising. However whilst Ben closed his game out with a convincing 6&5 win, it was a different matter for Joe who was up against another Herts regular in Phil Dormer who by the 16th had brought the game level. With momentum all with Phil, it was all credit to Joe with a great sand save on the 17th to wrest back the initiative and go 1 up. With shared birdies at 18 a great game narrowly in Essex favour.
With 3 games in the bag, only one more needed to secure a place in the final.
Game 4 with Mr Essex Andy May suffering at the hands of putting machine Connor O’Brien giving Herts their first point with a 3&2 win.
Game 5 saw the long awaited debut from young England star Harley Smith who was given the run around by George Ackerman before managing to squeeze a birdie down the last for a narrow one up win.
With Will Horne suffering a 4&2 defeat and Zach and Jack both securing comfortable wins the final score a 6/2 win for Essex.
This now sets up a Final match against Surrey at The Army Club on October 3rd for the SE title.
Our sincere thanks to Romford GC for allowing us to the use of their excellently presented course along with hospitality and catering to match.
