The final league match of the season saw Essex at home against Bedfordshire. Only a win would see us top the North section of the league and progress to the league final in October. Whilst Beds were at the bottom of the league group this didn’t do justice to the quality of the players in the side and they had put up spirited opposition in their previous games. So we had no intention of viewing this as a foregone conclusion and selected probably our strongest county side of the season which included current English Amateur Champion Todd Clements for the first time this year in a league match in addition to 3 home Chelmsford players in Brandon Meads, Arron Edwards-Hill and Ali Plumb.
The morning foursomes reflected our strength and after 9 holes we were up in 3 games and all square in the other, albeit by slender margins. This dominance was maintained on the back 9 and lunch arrived with Essex leading 3 ½ to ½ .
The afternoon singles demonstrated the desire to win by Essex with the 3 points required to win the tie arriving in quick style. First past the post was Arron with a fine 6&4 win over Paul Kenna closely followed by Taylor’s 5&4 win over Dan Jones and County Captain Jay Beisser beating Ryan Craig 2&1.
The remaining matches were all pretty close with only Will Percival losing his game to a birdie on the last hole against Beds number one Scott Armitage.
So, a fantastic win which sees Essex win the league from BB&O with a superior games won record and takes us to the final against Surrey at Farleigh Golf Club on October 8th.
Special mention again to our hosts Chelmsford Golf Club for the magnificent condition of the course and the hospitality given to ourselves and guests Bedfordshire.
Team: Todd Clements (Braintree), Ali Plumb, Arron Edwards-Hill and Brandon Meads (Chelmsford), County Captain Jay Beisser and Taylor Carter (Rayleigh), Andy May (Boyce Hill), Will Percival (Orsett)
